Rugged all-metal position sensors can reduce downtime in critical applications

As a small sensor, ifm’s “flat-pack” metal-face inductive proximity switch can withstand shock and vibration, thereby extending the sensor’s service life. These miniature sensors are vibration-resistant, have a wider operating temperature range, and a long service life.

Welding and stamping environments are very harsh, hot, and dirty (with the presence of weld slag), and sensors can be damaged by the mechanical shock of stamping machines. Flat, square sensors (also called “flat-pack”) are popular in these types of applications because their mounting is more controllable compared to cylindrical sensors, which may be installed too deep or too shallow on a machine.

Diagnostics via IO-Link

The flat-pack sensor with an IO-Link port can be set with millimeter precision for 2 switch points and can measure sub-millimeter changes that may shift over time. This feature helps to warn about situations like weld slag accumulation or position drift in welding cells.

Via IO-Link, it is possible to set the object to be targeted, the number of power-ons, operating time, and automatic sensor replacement, thereby preventing downtime.
